Description: 302 pp. Ex-library with usual markings, mylar over-jacket, some light wear to boards; "Nelson here continues the intertwined stories of the Nolans, the Hendersons, and the Fowlers that she began in Private Knowledge (1990). The story moves in time from 1849 to 1890: the setting is still primarily Tennessee, with side trips to Louisiana and Texas. The sudden movement from one storyline to another is confusing at first, but the characters soon establish themselves and compel attention. Nelson's writing remains smooth and lovingly attentive to the rhythms of the natural world. While the Nolans' story trails off inconclusively, the storylines involving the Hendersons and Fowlers are well developed. The focus is on families and the way they hurt as well as strengthen. The Fowlers' story takes a tragic twist that gives the novel a darker tone than its predecessor." -- Library Journal
